MAHPERD SCHOLARSHIP - POSTMARK DEADLINE IS MARCH 30 - Maryland Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance awards two scholarships to high school seniors planning a career as a teacher of dance, health, physical education or recreation. Other eligibility requirements include: rank in upper 50 percent of senior class; hold a cumulative gpa of 2.5 or above, plan to enroll in college, and demonstrate leadership qualities in the community and extracurricular participation. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

NORTHROP GRUMMAN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS MARCH 31 - A scholarship of $10,000 will be awarded to a graduating high school senior in each of the 23 Maryland counties and Baltimore City. The funds are to be used for tuition, books, lodging, and/or meals at the institution of higher education of the recipient's choice. Applicant qualifications are: must be a Maryland resident, must be a graduating senior of a public or accredited private high school in Maryland, must plan to attend an accredited college or university as a full-time student in an approved engineering program, must have a minimum composite SAT score of 1700, and must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. GARRETT SOIL CONSERVATION DISTRICT - DEADLINE IS APRIL 1 - Two recipients will be awarded $1,000 scholarships to use at an accredited college or university toward the full-time study of an agricultural or natural resources related degree. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. A one-page essay is required. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

MARYLAND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP - APRIL 1 DEADLINE - Maryland Emergency Management Association is offering one $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior in Western Maryland. The scholarship is to assist a student who plans to pursue a career in Emergency Management or related field. Scholarships will be awarded based on the quality of a student’s essay, community involvement, student records, grades, financial need, and personal reference. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

JOYCE COLBERT VETERINARY SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 2 -
The Tucker Community Foundation offers two $1,000 scholarships for high school seniors in Garrett County, MD and Tucker County and Preston County, WV who plan to pursue a college degree in veterinary science to work with large farm animals. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or at www.tuckerfoundation.net.

GARRETT COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 2 - Two Southern Garrett High School Seniors will receive a $500 scholarship. Scholarship will be awarded using the following criteria: have at least a 2.5 cumulative gpa, plan to pursue a health-related major at a two- or four- year college or university, demonstrate character, leadership and financial need, and involvement in extra-curricular and/or community activities. Preference will be given to a student enrolled in one of the following high school pathways: Medical Technology, Nursing or Professional Medical Services. Application requires two recommendations and a 500-word essay. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

GARRETT COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL MEDICAL STAFF HEALTH CAREERS SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 2 - Two Southern Garrett High School Seniors will receive a $500 scholarship. Scholarship will be awarded using the following criteria: have at least a 2.5 cumulative gpa, plan to pursue a health-related major at a two- or four- year college or university, demonstrate character, leadership and financial need, and involvement in extra-curricular and/or community activities. Preference will be given to a student enrolled in one of the following high school pathways: Medical Technology, Nursing or Professional Medical Services. DONALD LIPSCOMB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - RETURN TO GUIDANCE BY APRIL 9 - A $500 scholarship is offered to one 2010 graduating senior from Southern Garrett High School who plans to major full time in education and who has at least an 85% grade point average. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

DR. KENNETH MANN SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 13, 2010.
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded by the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals to a Maryland high school senior who plans to pursue a career in elementary teacher education. Criteria for selection includes: demonstrate financial need; submit letter of interest; a written statement about student's beliefs and commitment toward educating all students; recommendation from a faculty member and a person outside of school who would verify applicant's commitment to teacher education; scholastic achievement. Scholarship application is available in Guidance, but can also be obtained and filled out online by visiting www.wcps.k12.md.us , click on “schools”, click on “Elementary.” Scroll down to Maugansvile Elementary" and click on "More info." Look for downloadable resources and click on “Ken Mann Scholarship and Application.”

JOSEPH FOX, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - POSTMARK DEADLINE IS APRIL 15. The State of Maryland International Reading Association Council will award several $2000 scholarships to graduating seniors in Maryland high schools. Recipients of this scholarship must attend an accredited educational institution of their choice and pursue a degree in reading/ or a reading-related field and a teaching career. Selection criteria includes: verification of graduation from high school; acceptance and enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited college or university; pursue a major in education; document and verify current or previous community service in education-related activities; two letters of recommendation, a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and a written statement describing qualifications.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE TO SUBMIT TO GUIDANCE OFFICE IS APRIL 16 - A scholarship will be awarded a senior at Southern Garrett High School for excellence in academics and citizenship. The student must be planning to attend a college or university on a full-time basis in pursuit of a four-year degree. Applicants do not have to be related to a Legion member to apply for this award. Selection of the recipient will be based on the following criteria: academic goals and achievements, community service and activities, financial need, and letters of recommendation. Preference will be given to a student who has not received other scholarships.

JOHN T. MCCRAW SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 20 - The National Federation of the Blind of Maryland is offering two scholarships in the amounts of $2,000 and $1,500. These scholarships will be awarded to legally blind students who exhibit academic achievement and community involvement. Additional eligibility requirements include that the applicant be a legal resident of Maryland planning to enroll full-time in a post-secondary institution or be pursuing post-secondary studies in Maryland. The application is available in the Guidance Office.

GARRETT COMMUNITY CONCERT BAND SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 30 - The Garrett Community Concert Band will award a $500 scholarship to a high school senior who plans to attend an accredited college for Fall 2010 and who plans to continue participation in instrumental music or to pursue a degree in music. Auditions are not required. Students do not have to plan to pursue a degree in music.

MARYLAND COALITION OF POLICE AND DEPUTY SHERIFFS(MCOPS) - DEADLINE IS APRIL 30. STUDENTS NEED TO OBTAIN INFORMATION FROM THE MCOPS WEBSITE: www.marylandcops.org. (look under "Programs") MCOPS will award a $1,000 scholarship to a Maryland high school senior who submits the best essay on Maryland law enforcement and the general theme "Maryland Law Enforcement: A Commitment to Community" or "Drugs and Violence in our Schools and Community." More information is available in the Guidance Office.

GARRETT COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS MAY 1, 2010 - Garrett high school seniors graduating in 2010 and planning to enroll at Garrett College will receive financial assistance for tuition and fees from the Garrett County Scholarship. To be eligible, students must complete the following: the Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA) (preferably by March 1), the Garrett College application for admission, the Guaranteed Access Grant; and the County Scholarship Applications.

The Junior Women’s Civic Club May 1 - The Junior Women’s Civic Club is offering a one-time $500 scholarship for one Northern and one Southern graduating senior. Scholarship applications with criteria are available in the guidance office. The deadline is May 1.

LALITTA NASH McKAIG FOUNDATION - DEADLINE IS MAY 31 -
This Foundation is offering scholarships to students from Garrett, Allegany, Mineral, Hampshire, Bedford or Somerset counties based on financial need. The student must be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university in the United States. Students at vocational or technical schools are not eligible.
